Doral Inaugurates NW 109 Ave Connection
Doral, FL – The Doral City Council, joined by District 12 Miami-Dade County Commissioner Jose “Pepe” Diaz, inaugurated the NW 109 Ave connection to Doral Boulevard. This connection gives almost 900 households and several businesses an alternative to heavily used avenues, NW 107th and NW 112th.
This roadway improvement project, completed almost two months ahead of schedule and approximately $45,000 under the anticipated budget, will improve circulation and offer the community an alternative to driving. This new road has sidewalks, shared bicycle lanes and lighting, features that make it easier to leave your car at home.
“Projects like these, reaffirm the city’s goals in sustainable management of its transportation network by aggressively connecting our roads to provide alternative routes and to better distribute traffic,” said Mayor Luigi Boria.
This connection also gives adjacent developments the opportunity to further increase the mobility of its residents by building a second entrance from 109th Avenue. The City is offering expedited processing of plans and permits for developments willing to do so.

City Council Moves Transit Improvement Forward
Doral, FL – The City Council approved a pair of transit resolutions for inter-local agreements between Doral and the Miami-Dade Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO). The inter-local agreements provide up to $90,000 in grant funding to study the expansion of Doral trolley service to Florida International University (FIU) and the conversion of certain streets into one-way pairs to increase circulation capacity.
The trolley expansion was the initiative of FIU alum, Vice Mayor Christi Fraga. “During a meeting with FIU President Mark Rosenberg, I learned that 4,500 students and 600 faculty and staff live in Doral. We also discussed the mutual benefits of a trolley between Doral and the university. In a later meeting with Public Works and Dr. Shen, our transportation advisor, we discussed how getting just 10% of those drivers on the trolley would clear almost a half mile of cars from 107th Avenue,” explained the Vice Mayor.
“The majority of vehicles in Doral have a single passenger”, declared Dr. Joan Shen “people taking the trolley to FIU can make a big difference in our traffic congestion.”
Plans of the construction work and how it impacts traffic will be reviewed by the Public Works Department, fees will be assessed based on the number of lanes or sidewalks closed. Any construction without a permit will have to pay quadruple the fees.
The second study will examine which two parallel streets in Doral can be converted to an alternating pair of one-way streets. “Unlike reversible lanes, this would be a permanent change that would double the capacity of each of the paired streets,” Dr. Shen pointed out. “The connecting streets between the paired streets would remain two-way so we can maximize both circulation and capacity,” she added. Downtown Miami as well as New York City, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and Portland are all cities with paired one-way streets.
Police & Public Works Expansion
Doral, FL – City councilmembers and administrators joined the project’s designer, architects and contractors celebrating the topping off of the Police and Public Works expansion. The event marks the symbolic completion of the two story structure, scheduled to open in autumn 2016.
The new Category 5 hurricane facility allows Police and Public Works to provide increased levels of service to the community. In addition, building construction used the innovative concrete tilt-up technique. With this cost-effective and durable method, walls are placed on-site on the floor slab, and then tilted up and secured in place.
The 36,282 square foot Police addition includes support areas like property and evidences rooms, motorcycle garage, crime scene processing area, as well as general offices, locker and storage rooms among other features.
The 6,741 square foot Public Works expansion includes a three service bay facility for routine vehicle maintenance, a mezzanine for office, employee dining area, lockers rooms and storage areas as well as a new vehicle wash system.
The site improvement includes new landscape, water and sewer connections, a new drainage system with a retention pond area and new parking spaces for eight bicycles and 120 vehicles.

DOH-Miami-Dade offers free back-to-school immunizations
MIAMI – The Florida Department of Health in Miami-Dade County’s Immunization Program is urging parents to check their children’s immunization record to see if they are due for a vaccine. Children entering Kindergarten and 7th grade are normally due for a vaccine and need to meet the requirements for school entry.
If your child is due for a vaccine, please visit your child’s healthcare provider or one of our health department clinics.
